MEDITERRANEAN SCENE english

The “M e d i t e r r a n e a n  S c e n e” was created at the beginning of 90’s by Agghiastru and ‘characters’ such as Anthony Nadur, Liotrum, 3 Rosario Badalamenti, Fantasima, Faidda, Jafà, Sateo, Lifinia, Fabrizio Salina, Tati. In the last few years the Scene has been going through some changes. What does “Mediterranean Scene” mean? It’s a bunch of bands coming from the Sciacca area (Sciacca is a town near Agrigento, Sicily, Italy) and related to Agghiastru (a.k.a. Astru), the mastermind of this scene. The common point of these consists on trying to create something musically new, avoiding to fall into easy emulation. The bands of the “Mediterranean Scene” usually use ancient Sicilian dialect and English telling arcane legends about Mediterranean area. This makes everything really fascinating and gives a strong emotional impact.
PENTA CARPENTUS IMMAGINARUM GUDAZZU is the name that Astru uses to express his five musical sides. INCHIUVATU (Sicilian word for “nailed”) is Agghiastru’s one-man band which reveals a strong, dramatic and romantic component, along with a majestic atmosphere, close to symphonic black metal, which keyboards and pretty original folk melodies contribute emphasizing. The main themes of Inchiuvatu are sex, antichristianity and existential drama (Drama-Sex-Christ). To have an idea of how Inchiuvatu sounds like you should think about bands like Emperor, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth, though with different attitude. Line-ups: 1995, Agghiastru (guitars, keyboards and vocals), Nadur (bass) and Jafà (drums); 1996, Agghiastru (guitars, keyboards and vocals), Nadur (bass) and Faidda (drums); 1997, Agghiastru (all instruments and vocals). In the same year Agghiastru creates his side project LA CARUTA DI LI DEI (Sicilian for “fall of the gods”). Their original sound might be defined epic prog folk black. The concept behind them is about the Graeco-Roman period, when Sicily was the cradle of Mediterranean civilization. Their lyrics talk about the struggle between ancient warrior Keleo and the ancient gods; the story ends with Keleo’s defeat and there are deep reflections about the meaning of religions. Here are some musical references: Bal-Sagoth, Children Of Bodom, Therion, Iron Maiden…… Current line-up consists of: Astru (guitars, vocals and keyboards), Nadur (bass) and Lifinia (female vocals and synthesizers), plus, as special guests, ASTIMI (Sicilian for “curses” or “imprecations”)…They represent the extreme side of Mediterranean Scene and feature Astru on vocals, guitar and vocals, 3 on guitar and keyboards and Fantasima on bass. Their sound is in the vein of Deicide and Morbid Angel, but more extreme and blasphemous and it’s surrounded by the sick air of burning Mediterranean. First line-up (in 1997) featured Astru (drums, guitar and vocals), Nadur (bass) and Sateo (from the Transalpine Merrimack, guitar and vocals). 3 (alias Rosario Badalamenti), guitar player from Astimi, has a solo project by his own name, 3 (like the perfect divine number), that plays very extreme and violent ‘apocalyptic black industrial’ and he plays in another raw and satanic black metal band: MALEFICU SANTIFICATU (Sicilian for “evil sanctificated”). VISINA (name of a mythological Mediterranean snake) is the project where the members of the Scene play ‘dark bizarre electro gothic metal’. Its line-up features Agghiastru, 3, Lord T., Ossarium and someone else. The last ‘soul’ of Penta Carpentus Immaginarum Gudazzu is ULTIMA MISSA (Sicilian for “last mass”). Their sounds belongs to the typical atmospheres of the 70’s (progressive, acid, psychedelic) and some references of theirs are Paul Chain, early Death SS, Pink Floyd and Goblin and also Burzum and Darkthrone. This project is formed by Astru (guitar, vocals and organ), Faidda (drums) and Ossarium (bass). A peculiarity of these ‘characters’ is the need of recording their music in places like cemeteries, catacombs, crypts, desecrated churches etc…where can easily connect with death! Other bands of Mediterranean Scene are Lamentu, Addraunara, Inquietu, Vasamatri, Lava, Il Vitello d'Oro. LAMENTU were created by Agghiastru and LiotruM at the beginning of 1997, with Ummira (bass) and Jafà (drums and percussion) and their sound could be described as ‘cruel black/death/thrash with afro/tribal influences’. Through their music they want to honour the Liack-Aru demon, sovereign of the Black Continent. ADDRAUNARA (name of a mythological Mediterranean storm) is Nadur’s one-man band (he also plays bass in La Caruta Di Li Dei, Astimi and played in early Inchiuvatu). This ‘creation’ expresses itself through its epic side along with traditional symphonic black. INQUIETU (Sicilian word for “restless”) were formed by Lord Timpesta years ago and their first compositions (Avvampa and Disgrazia) were included in the first issue of the Mediterranean Scene demo compilation in 1997. Now they’re back with new, incredible and devastating material in the vein of pure black-metal style. The whole Mediterranean Scene is produced by Inch Productions (label created by themselves), while their sound takes shape in Castiu Studios and its bands sing in ancient Sicilian and English about arcane legends of that area.
THE MEDITERRANEAN IS BURNING!!!
